MBGERU

  • Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering Research Unit (MBGERU)

    MBGERU is a well equipped research unit of Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies, Tiruvalla (MACFAST) under guidance of Rev. Dr. Abraham Mulamoottil and Dr. C. Balagopal and coordinated Dr. Abdul Muneer. The unit is dedicated to the field of Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering research and mainly focus on the advent and new technologies in the field of Biotechnology.

    Projects for Students

    MBGERU has various ad-hoc research schemes from different agencies of Govt. of India and of the State like DST, DBT, ICMR etc. MBGERU also offers original research projects to the students of various institutes, colleges and universities. Apart from that MBGERU also offers short training courses in techniques of Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering.

    1. Well equipped and air conditioned Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering laboratory which consists following equipments.
    Thermal Cyclers (PCR machine), -20 deep freezer, centrifuge, Agarose and Polyacrylamide electrophoresis unit, UV trasilluminator and spectrophotometer etc
    2. Computer lab and 24 hours internet facility
    3. Well established library
    4. 100% original work for all
    5. Intensive guidance and training
    6. Opportunity to learn different Bioinformatics tools and Computational Biology languages

    Thrust areas of research

    1. Evolutionary, Ecological and Population Genetics

    a) Conservation aspects of endangered species in fish, birds and other mammals and plants
    b) Detection of genome diversity by haplotype and VNTR analysis in different species
    c) Genome and Functional Genome Diversity and functional evaluation of diversity
    d) Profiling of Genetic diversity using microsatellite, RFLP, mtDNA, AFLP and RAPD
    e) Testing Population Models in diseases
    f) Primer designing
    g) Cross species amplification of microsatellite loci
    h) Recombination, cloning and sequencing of microsatellite loci
    i) Analysis of genetic variation by electrophoresis of the primary gene products (proteins) allozymes

    2. Medical Biotechnology

    a) Identification of mutations and polymorphisms in different populations of various species
    b) Identification and characterization of disease and disease resistant genes
    c) Population based genotype studies to identify susceptibility / resistant genes for various disorders and diseases
    d) Molecular cloning, sequencing and characterization of genes / genome of pathogen and vectors

    3. Plant Molecular Biology

    Crop improvement using Molecular markers in different cultivable plant species Development of trasgenic plants by Agrobacterium mediated gene transfer
    Marker assisted selection for the crop improvement in different plant species
    Detection of genome polymorphism by using different types of molecular markers
    Development of SCAR marker from RAPD profiles
    Detection of genetic stability in tissue cultured plant species
